In time for the 2017-18 school year, Fairfield college students (and any local wing aficionados) will be getting a chance to enjoy some of the most popular chicken wings among Connecticut college students.
Wings Over, a national chicken-wing delivery franchise, started in 1999 in Amherst, Mass.; its flagship Connecticut location opened in Storrs in the early 2000s. After proving to be a hit among UConn students, other locations popped up in West Hartford, Newington and Bristol.
Wings Over Fairfield, the latest location and the first in Fairfield County, will be located at 2075 Black Rock Turnpike. The restaurant offers 22 flavors of wings, including four varieties of Buffalo sauce.
"It became like a cult following," Savin said of the franchise. "People love the food we deliver late at night. Someone who works for me said they were in Alaska – we used to give out t-shirts when school started – and she saw someone on the ferry who just graduated from UConn wearing one."
Savin has been looking to open up in the Fairfield market for a while now. With three universities right in town, it's a prime spot the restaurant.
He had his eye on the Black Rock location a year and a half ago, but ZaZi Mediterranean Grill beat him to it. With that restaurant out of business now, Savin jumped on the location.
"Black Rock Turnpike is a major corridor between the Merritt and I-95, so its very, very busy for those businesses and restaurants and shops," she said.
Students can expect to see Wings Over Fairfield employees on campus sometime at the beginning of the school year. Savin said they try to have presence at schools each year and hand out menus and branded swag.
Of course, non-college students are welcome at Wings Over Fairfield too. Balaz said she believes the restaurant will be successful for a number of reasons, including one simple one: "People just love wings."
