Forget asking friends for a ride.

A Shelton-based company that began offering discounted rates for luxury airport, ground and special events transportation in Connecticut two years ago has expanded its reach, and now offers its services up and down the East Coast.

OneWayLimo, which was started by Shelton native Joe Salemme in 2015, offers an online booking system that partners with limo companies to fill vehicles when they’re empty. Salemme came up with the idea after successfully finding a way to fill the empty legs of truck drivers’ trips years before, according to Will Haire, principal partner and director of marketing for the company.

Customers can visit OneWayLimo.com or call the company at 1-800-933-1929 to book a trip. They are then matched with limos.

Because the limo companies are already planning to make those trips via previous bookings, they offer customers a 30 percent discount on the travel cost. The companies then benefit from having customers occupy their vehicles on the leg of the trip that would normally be empty.

“We’re growing at a very fast rate,” Haire said, in a phone interview with Hearst Connecticut Media. “We’re expecting by mid-2018 to be in the entire continental U.S.”

Although the company also offers ground and special events transportation, those rates are not discounted like the airport rates. In those cases, Haire said the company receives quotes from its partner companies and then offers its customers the lowest rate.

The company has nearly 150 affiliates throughout the East Coast.

“Even though we cater mostly to specialty vehicles, OneWayLimo is able to market to the customers that we service, but may not be able to find us,” said Fraser McDonald, owner of Oxford-based Carriage Limo, in a press release.

Salemme compared OneWayLimo’s service to the that of travel websites like Priceline and Expedia for airlines and hotels.

“Our goal is to work with the entire black-car market and offer travelers an alternative to Uber and Lyft,” Salemme said, in the press release. “Customers simply log onto OneWayLimo.com for access to licensed, insured, clean and professionally operated vehicles at significantly reduced rates.”

The company plans to unveil a OneWayLimo mobile app in October.

Besides his role with OneWayLimo, Salemme is also known in the Naugatuck Valley for his developments, which include the Hawk’s Ridge housing complex in Shelton.

He also recently purchased the former Lifetouch Studios property on Main Street in downtown Derby with plans to redevelop that site.
