After filing Tuesday for bankruptcy protection from creditors, Payless ShoeSource lists stores in Norwalk and Newtown in what could be only an initial round of closures, impacting 400 locations immediately.

Payless is closing its Darinor Plaza store at 500 Connecticut Ave. in Norwalk, while retaining a second Norwalk store on Westport Avenue. Also slated for closure is a store at 67 Newtown Rd. in Newtown, as well as Payless sites in Old Saybrook, Waterbury and Wethersfield.

For the time being, Payless is maintaining additional southwestern Connecticut locations in Bridgeport, Danbury, Stamford, Milford, Stratford, and Trumbull, of some 4,400 stores globally. On Tuesday, Payless stated it is “working to aggressively” modify terms of remaining leases, with the possibility of additional U.S. closures if landlords do not accede.

Payless stated it plans to continue operating normally with respect to customers and vendors, that it will maintain normal product inventories and that it will continue to sell and honor gift cards. The company will maintain its return policy save for purchases from stores slated for closure, where all sales will be final. Stores that are closing will not accept coupons or purchases made through loyalty points programs.

The company has a $385 million financing package in place from lenders as it works through chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in federal bankruptcy court in Missouri, with Payless stating it expects to complete the process within four months.

Payless has established a call center to handle U.S. and Canadian customer inquiries at 1-844-648-5574.
