You know a children’s book is popular when it goes straight from book to touring musical, skipping the TV show.
“Pinkalicious — The Musical,” based on the best-selling book by Elizabeth and Victoria Kann, will bring young children and their taller kin to the Shubert Theatre in New Haven Friday, during kids’ vacation week, for two daytime live performances.
The 50-minute show, a nice length for young ones and merciful length for their adult travel companions, will feature a similar look to the “Pinkalicious” and “Purplicious” books from HarperCollins, which came out in 2006 and 2007 and were illustrated by Victoria, sister of Elizabeth (both raised in Brooklyn).
The plot: Pinkalicious can’t stop eating pink cupcakes despite warnings from her parents. Her pink indulgence lands her at the doctor’s office with Pinkititis, a condition that turns her pink from head to toe. And she’s good with that. But when her hue goes too far, only Pinkalicious can figure out a way to get out of the predicament.
Wait, did we say there’s no TV show? Of course there is! A series on PBS will begin in February. After Victoria released “Peterrific” in May 2017, the new show will be called “Pinalicious and Peterrific.” The touring musical, meanwhile, will also play the Westport Country Playhouse in March.
Shubert Theatre, 247 College St, New Haven. Friday, Dec. 29, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. $50-$19. 203-562-5666.
