A group of nursing homes at odds with its union workers informed them that unless they agree to concessions they are considering closing their facilities. The company sent letters to workers at the West River Health Care Center in Milford, the Danbury Health Care Center, Long Ridge of Stamford, Westport Health Care Center and the Newington Health Care Center that said the company is seriously considering filing applications with the Connecticut Department of Social Services to close their centers. HealthBridge Inc. offered employees a three percent raise over three years, coupling it with an increase in health insurance benefits and a reduction in paid time off. The company must file a certificate of need with the state Department of Social Services, a public hearing must be held and the company would have to prove that there are enough beds in the state to accept their patients, officials said.

A judge sentenced a 26-year-old Hartford woman to six years in prison Wednesday for a drunk-driving crash that killed a pregnant teenager and a truck driver last May on Interstate 95 in Darien.

The fatal crash occurred around 6 a.m. on May 7 when Torres, a mother of four children, was driving back from an alcohol-fueled birthday celebration at a Manhattan nightclub when she hit a tractor-trailer, causing it to overturn and burst into flames.

During the sentencing hearing, the prosecutor, Assistant State's Attorney David Applegate, argued for a prison sentence that was less than the eight-year maximum but more than the five-year minimum, according to the plea agreement.

Ehring said his client accepted responsibility for the fatal crash right away and suffered several emotional episodes in the months following the accident that required medical attention.
