The 2013 Darien projected grand list is $8.3 billion, a $611 million net decrease over the 2012 grand list.

Much of the decrease is because of the revaluation that took place this year.

According to the town assessor's office, many Connecticut municipalities have experienced decreases in their grand lists because of the housing market.

The grand list is the total assessed value of all taxable property in town.

In terms of the overall affect on the town, the reduction in the grand list means the value of a mill will also decrease, according to Town Administrator Karl Kilduff.

As a result, the mill rate will need to be increased. One mill is equal to $1 paid per $1,000 of assessed property.

The decrease in value of real estate is the driving factor for the reduction in the grand list. From 2012 to 2013, the real estate value in Darien decreased by $619,403,390.

The motor vehicle and personal property values increased by a combined $8,333,406, according to the grand list.
