For the first time in several years, the Darien Public Schools has found itself in "bidding wars" with other districts over potential hires, according to interim Superintendent Lynne Pierson.

"I want to share with the board that the hiring process is quite active," Pierson said at the Board of Education's Tuesday meeting. "We are pleased with the quality of the candidates that are coming to us."

The board approved the hiring of seven new teachers, five at Darien High School and two at Middlesex Middle School. There are still positions in the district that need to be filled.

However, Pierson said a few candidates have turned down offers from Darien to work in other districts.

"Quite frankly, we have lost two or three candidates who we thought were outstanding, but who had multiple offers and chose to accept the position elsewhere," Pierson said.

Some of the candidates turned away from Darien because it was a "matter of money," Pierson said, while others had personal reasons.

"We're tracking this because it's important, and when (interim Director of Human Resource Michael) Cicchetti arrives, I'll let him take a good, hard look at this," Pierson said. "I need to have the question answered, `Is this an anomaly or is this people being less interested in working in Darien?,' to be quite frank."
