A thank you from Scouts tag sale chair

To the Editor,

The sun was certainly shining down on us this year at the Darien Boy Scouts' 43rd annual tag sale. We cannot begin to express our gratitude to everyone, even Mother Nature, for helping to make this event a success. We could not have done it without our generous donors, our graciously patient and understanding neighbors, our almost 300 volunteers, our 52 extremely dedicated and hardworking department chairs, and of course the almost 2,000 shoppers that came out to find a treasure while supporting our local Scouts. The funding raised at this event is critical to keep our cabin, property and Scouting programs running smoothly for another year.

We also wish to offer our heartfelt thanks to the entire community: The Darien Police for working closely with us to direct traffic and ensure safety on and off our property; Rings End Lumber for donated materials, use of their parking lot and help with hauling; our town's fire departments for fire safety review; Post 53 for providing medical safety on site; Vernals BP service station for assisting with car sales; Fox Hill Builders; the Growing Concern; Alan Hyatt Landscaping for our copious hauling needs; Koon's parking lot for volunteer parking; the local papers for timely and thorough coverage, and all the local businesses that posted our fliers.

Every year, we are happy to aid our community in reusing, recycling and reducing waste. After the sale, remaining items are donated to over a dozen charities, including Operation Hope, Habitat, DVCC, IICONN, Computers for Guatemala, Fraternite Notre Dame and Quest for Peace. Then our dedicated volunteers return to sort all leftover items for recycling. The annual tag sale is an enriching event for everyone involved, including our Scouts, who see a community come together, learn the behind-the-scenes planning of an enormous event, and implement an environmental mindset from many different angles.

Thank you all for supporting this event every year. We look forward to seeing you at the tag sale again next year!
