After 27 years, Darien has a new public works director.

On Monday, the Board of Selectmen unanimously approved the hiring of Edward Gentile Jr. to succeed Bob Steeger, who retired after 27 years with the town. Gentile will start work on June 2 and will be paid a salary of $135,000.

"I think he's going to be a great addition to Town Hall for sure," Selectman Gerald Nielsen said.

Gentile spent 11 years as the deputy city engineer in Stamford and worked as an engineer with the Yankee Gas Division of Northeast Utilities since 2010.

"Along with extensive engineering experience, Mr. Gentile has expertise in drafting, presenting and implementing operating and capital budgets, municipal project management, construction management, (Federal Emergency Management Agency) regulations, municipal parking facilities management, public facility management, energy management systems and roadway repair and maintenance," First Selectman Jayme Stevenson said at the meeting. "Many of Mr. Gentile's qualifications are specific to issues currently pending in Darien."

A panel of town staff and outside professionals interviewed "several outstanding candidates" for the director position, Stevenson said.

"I'm delighted that he's joining us," Selectman Kip Hall said.
