As part of the flower show and 70th anniversary, Nielsen-Baumann and her three siblings -- co-owners Tami Whittier, Gerald Nielsen Jr. and Karen Kuehler-- traveled with Vitti to Amsterdam March 22 to visit the Aalsmeere wholesale floral market.

The market in Holland offers 234 acres of flowers from countries such as Israel, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand, and is one of the places from which Vitti purchases flowers.

During a single day, more than 20 million flowers are purchased from the wholesale market.

The Nielsen family and Vitti were there to meet the vendors from whom they purchase the flowers on a daily basis, as well as meet growers of flowers like cymbidiums vanda orchids, gerbera daisies, roses and tulips.

During the flower show, representatives from Nielsen's Equadorian, Japanese and Hawaiian flower vendors will be at the store to speak with the customers.

Vitti believes that flowers can alter the way a room feels.

"I look at plants and flowers and they just give people energy," said Vitti, who has a degree in landscape design and has been involved in the floral industry since 1969. "They tend to put a real beauty and energy into the home, whether they're indoor or outdoor."

The flower show will be on display from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, April 4, to Sunday, April 6.
