State Rep. Terrie Wood has co-sponsored a bill which will prohibit telemarketers from transmitting inaccurate or misleading caller identification information.

House Bill 5089 -- An Act Prohibiting Telemarketers From Transmitting Inaccurate Or Misleading Caller Identification Information, will forbid any telephone solicitor from intentionally cause or use any blocking device or service that will get around a consumer's personal caller identification service or device.

During a legislative session on Tuesday, April 17, Rep. Wood spoke of her support for this bill on the house floor.

"This bill will ensure that any company making an unsolicited call will have to identify and list their company accurately and not mask themselves as a private or toll free caller," Rep. Wood said. "A majority of my constituents, along with myself, have been affected by these calls on a regular basis. Essentially, we pay for phones lines and then become hounded with these disguised, unsolicited phone calls, despite being signed up for the `no call' list -- it's a violation of privacy."

The bill passed in the House 138-10. The bill now awaits a vote by the Senate.
