A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect this afternoon for southern Connecticut through 8 p.m., with the National Weather Service warning the storms across the region could trigger downpours, large hail and damaging winds.

The chance of precipitation is rated at 80 percent, by the weather service.

Even though the greatest danger for storms is now forecast to ease after 8 p.m., strong storms are still possible later tonight through 11 p.m.
