An early morning accident put two people in the hospital after their vehicle crashed through a guardrail and landed into the Noroton River.

Officers from Stamford and Darien responded to the accident at 1:05 a.m. after hearing reports of a vehicle that had driven into the river, police said. According to the report, a 21-year-old Trumbull resident was driving a 2001 Buick west on the Post Road when it struck a guardrail on the right side of the road, traveled down the embankment and then was partially submerged in the Noroton River. A 22-year-old Darien resident was also in the vehicle at the time of the accident, police said.

Both occupants were able to get out of the vehicle and were taken to Smokey Joe's BBQ before being transported to Stamford Hospital as a precaution to be treated for weather-related exposure, police said. The accident is still under investigation.
