CANNES, France (AP) — For 66 years, the Cannes Film Festival's highest prize, the Palme d'Or, has been one of the most prestigious in movies.

Winners have ranged from classic American films (Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver," Francis Ford Coppola's "The Conversation") to European classics (Federico Fellini's "La Dolce Vita").

Ahead of Sunday's presentation of this year's Palme d'Or, here are the last 20 years of Cannes' Palme winners:

Rasoulof is also Iranian, his movies are banned in his homeland and he's been sentenced to jail by the Islamic regime there.

The pair received six years In prison and were banned from filmmaking for 20 years on charges that included "making propaganda" against the ruling system, but Rasoulof's sentence was later reduced to a year on appeal.

There is going to be no legal permit, license, the government is going to be opposed to it, authorities and everything, he said.

Much of the film appears to have been shot in Iran, but Rasoulof, who produced the movie himself, was staying tight-lipped about how he managed to get the film made without getting caught.

There was much speculation about the film in the run-up to the Cannes festival, which ends Sunday.

Director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun stirred up some emotion and national pride when he premiered his new movie "Grigris," at the Cannes Film Festival this week.

The filmmaker, who was born in the troubled Central African republic of Chad, said the film received a 20-minute standing ovation from the festival audience, which included some Chad politicians.

The model and actress, who is French, said she was proud to represent her African roots at the festival with the film.

The film world can be intoxicating to some people, but Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich isn't one of them —even after spending time at the Cannes Film Festival.

Ulrich was on the French Riviera to promote the band's upcoming film "Through the Never," a 3-D film that blends concert footage of the band with a dramatic plot.

CANNES, France (AP) — Academy award-winner Marion Cotillard gave her all and even learned another language to play a Polish woman struggling with the realities of 1920s New York in James Gray's terse offering, "The Immigrant."

The gritty drama, which premieres Friday at the Cannes Film Festival and is competing for the Palme d'Or, was filmed in part on the almost mythical Ellis Island, where millions of immigrants stepped off the boat to America in search of a better life, captured with stark beauty by cinematographer Darius Khondji.

Bruno, played by Joaquin Phoenix in a melodramatic performance that has divided critics, is attracted by Ewa's beauty and forces her into his cabaret outfit, which also serves as a brothel.

Cotillard's performance has already garnered attention from critics for the intensity of her performance and for learning Polish for the role — some 20 pages of the film script were in that language, she noted.

CANNES, France (AP) — For the aging, gruff patriarch of his father-son road trip "Nebraska," Alexander Payne tried to lure Gene Hackman out of retirement and considered the likes of Robert Duvall and Jack Nicholson.

Though the part, reticent and cantankerous, isn't the typical socks-knocking kind of stuff, Dern's unadorned portrait has been one of the most hailed performances at the Cannes Film Festival, where the black-and-white "Nebraska" premiered to warm reviews Thursday.

All during your career, you look for a certain kind of security from the people you're working with, people that believe you're talented, that you can do what you can do, says the 76-year-old Dern, who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in 1978's Coming Home.

Dern is an eager storyteller, and during an interview Friday, his conversation took detour upon detour, ranging from the directions of Alfred Hitchcock to how best to cheat at boarding school.

In the film, Dern stars as Woody Grant, a retired, alcoholic veteran showing signs of senility.

When he receives a mass mailing promising him a $1 million award, he sets out down the road from his Montana home to collect it in person in Nebraska.

Dern calls Woody "a monument to the people like that, that still exist in this country — a guy that's not going to leave, that's not going to get out."

When Forte, early in the production, told Dern that he was having trouble adjusting to dramatic acting and establishing their relationship, Dern gave him some advice.

(AP) — A Canadian man is facing charges that he stalked the brother of Jennifer Lawrence after authorities say he repeatedly insisted that the man put him in touch with the Oscar-winning actress so he could protect her, according to court documents.

FBI agents in Louisville charged Cong on Monday with interstate stalking and repeated harassing phone communications.

Cong's attorney, public defender Donald J. Meier, requested the psychiatric exam.

FBI Special Agent Richard Boswell III wrote in an affidavit that Cong started contacting "B.L.," who is identified in a related state court record as the actress' brother Blaine Lawrence, on April 4.

Cong told Blaine Lawrence he "wouldn't kill anyone for sure," but would scare people with real things happening in their lives and would get angry "and all hell's going to break loose," Boswell wrote.

The filmmakers got together again this week to tell another Hoosiers tale, very different from the first, much shorter in length, but like the film, emotionally powerful and inspiring.

Pena said the challenge for the new commercial, and ones to follow, is to set IU apart from the multitude of university commercials that television viewers see during normal programming and especially during sporting events on stations such as ESPN and the Big Ten Network.

There was a palpable sense that something special was being created within the fairly large cast and crew filming at the Musical Arts Center and Simon Music Library & Recital Center building.

The story line for the commercial follows an aspiring opera singer from her audition for admittance to the Jacobs School through her education — learning staging, production and makeup to auditioning for roles, getting cast for minor parts and finally winning leading roles.

Perez is played by recent master's graduate Hanna Brammer in the IU commercial, but Pizzo, producer Jo Throckmorton and a small crew will travel to London to film Perez where she currently is performing at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

The final scene showing Perez in all her glory will cap the concept of an IU student's journey from aspiring music student to opera star.

Brammer performed like a pro Thursday, doing take after take with ease as Pizzo, Murphy and Throckmorton assessed angles, lighting and various elements of the shots and the small details of the actors' performances.

After discussing the concept for the 60-second commercial with Pizzo, he immediately decided on a musical score using the technique of vocalese and having Brammer sing vowel sounds without lyrics, because lyrics would likely divert attention from the message of the commercial.

The onstage scenes came naturally to Jewel when she played the role of June Carter Cash in the new Lifetime movie, "Ring of Fire."

Jewel's experience came in handy in an unexpected way during a key scene in the film, which premieres Monday (9 p.m. EDT).

While the 2005 theatrical film "Walk the Line" depicted June and Johnny's love story mostly from his perspective, "Ring of Fire" is a portrait of June before she met Johnny, during their courtship and through their long marriage.

The movie's executive producer, Jonathan Koch, said he'd had dinner once with Jewel and husband Ty Murray and came away impressed, particularly by her sense of humor.

[...] the 39-year-old Jewel, who has lately concentrated on making music for the country and children's markets while raising her son, had decided not to pursue the field.

Jewel did her research, impressed with a musical career that began with country music's legendary Carter family (actress Frances Conroy plays Cash's mother, Maybelle, and musician John Doe plays her uncle, A.P. Carter).

Cash's sense of humor had its limits, though, best illustrated in a scene where June rejects some corny, demeaning lines written for her as she was about to sing on Johnny's television variety show.

There was certainly nothing funny about the years of drug abuse she had to put up with, both at the beginning of their romance and later in life.

Beyond the usual pressures involved in trying to make a good movie, Jewel and the filmmakers had to deal with the legacy of "Walk the Line."

CANNES, France (AP) — The annual Cannes festival on the French Riviera is the grandest platform in the world for the highest ambitions of film, a place where the art form is worshipped with wild passion and adoring reverence.

"The way that things are moving because of the financing of films, television has almost become where a lot of people seek creativity," said Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, who premiered at the festival his Bangkok noir "Only God Forgives," starring Ryan Gosling.

Refn, the director of "Drive," is working on his television debut, a version of the 1969 French science fiction film "Barbarella" for France's Canal Plus.

Hollywood studios passed on the film, which stars Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, suggesting that it was too gay to play at the box office.

Soderbergh, long considered one of America's finest filmmaking talents, is stepping away from moviemaking, but is enthusiastically moving into television.

The two filmed their sometimes humiliating efforts to find financing — and the necessary marketing budget — for an adult drama.

With appearances from Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese and Roman Polanski, the movie often feels like a funeral for the days of popular, dangerous movies.
