DARIEN — For a ninth year in a row a bevvy of community volunteers helped give food directly to those in need through the national nonprofit Feed My Starving Children.

Held Saturday and Sunday at Middlesex Middle School, close to 1,300 people signed on to work in teams that hand-packed individual portions of a mix of rice, soy, vegetables and vitamins.

“We’re hoping to do 250,000 packs,” said Ginna Yerrall, chair of the event, who noted that the organization found an anonymous donor willing to match the amount if the Darien contingency can top that number.

Yerrall was hopeful, as more people than ever signed on to help this year.

“The people want to keep coming back to do it year after year, because there’s a need,” she said.
