David Christian Bognar, 19, of 236 Old Kings Highway North, Darien, was arrested Wednesday on charges of driving while intoxicated and evading responsibility after police determined that he struck a utility pole and fled the scene.

At 11:30 a.m., Darien police received a report that a vehicle in the area of Heights Road and Noroton Avenue was missing a tire and was driving only on its front rim. Officers located the vehicle parked next to an air pump at a nearby gas station.

Police reported that Bognar appeared incoherent and exhibited signs of intoxication. A juvenile passenger was unresponsive and clearly was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said. The juvenile was incapacitated and transported to the hospital, the report stated.

Bognar was administered field sobriety tests, which he failed, police said, who added that officers determined that he had struck a nearby utility pole and left the scene of the accident.

He was released on a promise to appear in court April 22.
