A Better Chance in Darien is a not-for-profit organization that provides four-year academic and boarding scholarships to academically promising young women of color from underserved areas allowing them to realize their academic and social potential. Currently six scholars live in Darien and attend Darien High School. The 23 member board is responsible for overseeing the education of the scholars, and meeting basic needs such as food, housing, and transportation. Also covered are expenses having to do with health, tutoring, counseling and applying to college, as well as extra-curricular and enrichment activities. The annual budget of $126,000 is raised entirely in Darien and Fairfield County.

The program provides an outstanding education, both academically and developmentally, for the scholars, and enriches both the high school and the town by forging connections between local assets and the diverse perspectives and life experiences of the scholars and their families. In addition, A Better Chance in Darien helps close the academic achievement gap, and the subsequent opportunity achievement gap that has proved so challenging to the success of minority youth in the United States. Scholars have entered colleges such as Columbia, Cornell, UVA and Wesleyan.
