The Darien Community Association, 274 Middlesex Road, will present "Peace is a Dream in my Afghan Land" with Shogofa Amini at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 28.
Amini is a poet, student and advocate for the rights of women in her homeland, Afghanistan. She will discuss hidden aspects of Afghan culture, food and customs, and about life under Taliban rule. She will share her personal struggle to be educated in a country where women are kept invisible and not allowed to study.
"I believe in the equality of women," she said. "All women, all over the world, hold up half the sky. But in Afghanistan, women are not equal partners to men. Eighty-five percent of Afghan women are illiterate. Now it is time to change the conditions for women in Afghanistan."
Organized by the DCA's general programs committee, the presentation is part of the annual meeting, and will be preceded by a short member vote on the 2014-15 slate of board members.
Admission is free for members and $10 for nonmembers. For reservations, visit dariendca.org or call 203-655-9050.
