After accident, Darienite charged with DUI

Daniel Hughes, 47, of 722 Hollow Tree Ridge Road, Darien, was arrested Dec. 30 on charges of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, failure to maintain the minimum insurance and failure to drive right after a three-car accident on Mansfield Avenue.
According to police, the accident took place near 106 Mansfield Ave. at 6:08 p.m. a 2013 Jeep Wrangler, operator by Hughes, drove over the double-yellow line and struck a 1998 Toyota, which then swerved and struck a 2005 Saab.
When police arrived at the scene, Hughes was sitting on a rock wall and was unsteady on his feet when he approached police, according to the report.

Police reported that officers detected the odor of alcohol on Hughes, who told police that he drank before driving, but claimed he did not consume a lot.
He was administered field sobriety tests, which he failed, and refused to take a Breathalyzer test, police said.
He was released on $250 bond and was scheduled to appear in court Jan. 9.
