Matsuri Japanese Fusion restaurant in Darien has the ability to transport its customers across the globe; allowing them to sample different -- and delicious -- delicacies from Asia.

A recent tasting dinner took place and the lucky few sampled some of Matsuri's best dishes. The restaurant, which is coming up on its three-year anniversary, wants the public to enjoy fresh and tasty Japanese, Chinese and Thai food in a colorful, funky environment.

From the bamboo shoot entryway to the glittery tile walls, Matsuri provides a feast for the eyes well before the first course comes. The walls are painted in Moroccan tones; gold, purple and magenta stand out in the dining room.

Spicy Kana Salad and edamame came first. The salad is made with crab, cucumber, seaweed and spicy mayonnaise; edamame is steamed soybeans. Satay chicken was followed; these spicy skewered chicken pieces were meant to be dipped in a peanut sauce. Other appetizers included Vietnamese spring rolls; wonton tuna and "tuna pizza," which was tuna on a tortilla with guacamole and balsamic dressing -- delicious.

The main part of the meal included the Chef Special Omakase -- a sushi tasting. A huge bowl filled with ice shavings and sculpted blocks of ice housed different types of fish. This tasting will set customers back a little, it's slightly pricy, but well worth it. The fish was fresh and tasty.

Two creative rolls were brought out next: the Crazy Dragon roll (shrimp tempura, asparagus topped with eel and avocado in eel sauce) and the Snow White roll (spicy scallop topped with yellowtail, jalapeno and chili cause). Both rolls provided the tasters with a combinations of textures and flavors in one bite.

Curry chicken and Pad Thai rounded out the meal. Both dishes were hearty and flavorful. Desert came in the form in a chocolate lava cake, which was delicious, of course.

All dishes were presented in a classic, clean style on white plates that showed off their colors and design. Eating can be an art form, and the staff at Matsuri recognize that. The were all friendly and knowledgeable about their menu; they wanted to provide their customers with the ultimate Asian dining experience.
