Book Aid Plan receives many requests for books in Spanish to help with literacy programs in the U.S. and the Americas.
Last November, the organization had asked local families through the local press to collect Spanish/English bilingual booklets offered in a special promotion in Cheerios cereal boxes.
"We were very pleased to see the collection bin filled up in our lobby," Geraldine Trippitelli, volunteer for the organization, said.
The New Year also brought a big surprise. General Mills found the request in the Darien papers and offered to donate 1,000 copies of the books to Darien Book Aid. General Mills has been promoting literacy for several years notably by offering free books.

Starting March 23, Darien Book Aid will hold a book drive in conjunction with Darien Library. New or nearly new children's books are welcome. The collection bin will be at Darien library. For more information on donating to Darien Book Aid visit www.darienbookaid.org
