The Darien 11U Little League team was crowned champions of the 2011 Stamford American Jerry LaMotta Invitational Baseball Tournament after defeating Ridgefield American 9-0 at Vine Road Field in Stamford on Sunday.

Darien showed itself to be a powerhouse by running through the tournament with a perfect 7-0 record. The competition consisted of 10 teams from Fairfield Country which were broken down into two pools.

Darien emerged from pool play with a perfect 4-0 record and then moved on to quarterfinal play where it defeated Northrup 15-0. Darien then scored a 9-3 victory over Ridgefield American in the semi-finals. Sunday's championship game against Ridgefield National was a complete team victory as each player contributed in the resounding 9-0 win.

Will Enzor pitched 5 and two thirds innings of shutout ball in the championship game, allowing just two hits while keeping Ridgefield National off balance with both his fastball and change-up.

The Darien offense raced out to an early lead when Harry Rayhill hit a bases clearing three-run double to the left field wall in the bottom of the first inning. Sean O'Malley then scored Rayhill on a single to center and Darien was off to an early 4-0 lead.

Other offensive stars for Darien included Justin Jordan who doubled, singled and knocked in three runs, Ethan Ehlers who singled and scored three runs, Fin Batson who singled and scored a pair of runs and Justin Van de Graaf who stroked a hard single to left field.

Darien also played strong defense in the championship game. Zach Dimonekas shined at backstop by catching an excellent game. Nick Conte held down third base and made a nice catch on a sky high pop-up directly into the sun and Chris Vernals looked good in left field by keeping Ridgefield National from getting any extra base hits.

Team member Nick Green played well in the tournament pool play but was unavailable for the championship round.
