Every year the Jackie Robinson Park of Fame, INC. hosts a Christmas party for more than 300 children. For almost 15 years, the Darien Girl Scouts have helped make this day possible.
This year's event was held at the Chester Addison Community Center of Stamford Sunday, Dec. 18. The party includes a hot meal, face painting, entertainment by local youth dancers and singers, as well as a visit from Santa, who handed out gifts to each child. Thi day is made possible in large part by the behind the scenes efforts of the Darien Girl Scouts.
Starting in November, all levels from Daisy to Senior Girl Scout troops (kindergartners to senior high school students) volunteered to participate in a number of different ways. Some troops wrapped more than 600 gifts donated by local merchants and individuals. Other troops decorated 500 candy canes, left at each place setting as a festive treat. One troop made more than 300 holiday poppers.
Older troops ornamented motre than 200 miniature Christmas trees for table-top centerpieces and for participants to take home. On the day of the event, all of these efforts were brought together as several Girl Scouts and their families transformed the Chester Addison gym into a Christmas celebration. In addition, the Girl Scouts also festooned the Yerwood Center Soup Kitchen to further spread the Christmas spirit. More than 34 troops with 400 Darien Girl Scouts contributed their time and creative efforts.
