The Darien High School varsity rugby squad is looking forward to a spring campaign of further success within the Connecticut High Schools league.

The Blue Wave will once again be competing in Division-I of the state competition, alongside traditional rivals such as Greenwich, Staples, Fairfield and Fairfield Prep.

For the 2013 season, more schools will be participating in the Connecticut league, an indication of the growing strength of rugby as a high school sport within the state. The increasing number of schools with a rugby program has entailed the establishment of a further, third division within the league to cater for newcomers this spring. In addition, several schools have established girls programs, a development likely to gain further ground over the years to come.

At a recent gathering of returning and prospective players, there was excitement at what the forthcoming season would bring, following several years of achievement for the Blue Wave, which won division titles at the Connecticut championships in 2010 and 2011.

The season begins with a jamboree at Fairfield Warde on Saturday, March 16, although scrimmages prior to that date may be arranged. It concludes with the state championships at the end of May. For a full schedule of games, visit www.darienrugby.com.

At the preseason meeting, Jimmy Weinstock was appointed A-team captain for 2013, with Alex Gunn as vice-captain and pack leader. In addition, Jeff Gebauer and Chris Brophy were appointed co-presidents of varsity rugby for the forthcoming season, all four being collectively responsible for leadership both on and off the field over the months ahead.
