Darien Men's Association new season starts Sept. 3

The Darien Men's Association will kick off its 2014-15 season with portrait painter John Howard Sanden at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the Darien Community Association, 274 Middlesex Road.

Sanden has completed more than 500 portraits of prominent figures in American public, professional and business life. His clients have included those in education and industry. He also painted the portraits of President George W. Bush and Laura Bush that now hang in the White House. He is the founder of the Portrait Institute, and has toured the nation, teaching his ideas and techniques to thousands.

Sanden is the author of "Painting the Head in Oil," "Successful Portrait Painting," "Portraits From Life" and "The Portraits of John Howard Sanden."

In 1994, the American Society of Portrait Artists presented its first John Singer Sargent Medal for Lifetime Achievement to Sanden.

The DMA meets weekly on Wednesdays from early September to early June. Each meeting features a program speaker: Past speakers have included Scott Pelley of CBS News and "60 Minutes"; Bill Scheft, comedy writer for David Letterman; Fay Vincent, former commissioner of Major League Baseball; George Bodenheimer, the executive chairman of ESPN; Gov. Dannel P. Malloy; and U.S. Rep. Jim Himes.

The DMA also provides a variety of weekly activities for member participation, including a barbershop group, book club, bowling, bridge, computers, genealogy, golf, hiking, paddle tennis, tennis, walks in New York City, a weekly dining group and woodworking.

Membership is open to men residing in Darien and the surrounding towns who are 55 and older.

There are also two annual social events with members and their invited guests.

In addition, several times each year, the DMA organizes day trips by bus for members and invited guests.
