A defective brake light led to numerous criminal charges and the use of Tasers during a routine traffic stop.

Stacey Sawyer, 25, of Norwalk, Dwayne Leak, 23, of Norwalk, and Corey Young, 23, of Bridgeport were arrested April 10 after officers noticed their Nissan Maxima, which was traveling east on the Post Road at 5:30 p.m., had a defective brake light, police said.

After pulling the vehicle over, officers began questioning Sawyer, the driver, and discovered his license was suspended, police said. Sawyer has an extensive criminal record and was placed under arrest, police said.

Officers began questioning Young, who was sitting in the back seat of the car. According to the report, Young also has an extensive criminal record. The officer asked him if he had any items on him that he shouldn't, and as Young walked toward the police car, he removed his jacket and ran across Post Road, police said. Officers found a loaded .38 revolver in the jacket and began chasing Young. One officer warned Young he would be Tasered if he didn't stop running, but he continued to flee, police said. The officer fired his Taser, but Young continued to run. A second officer caught up with Young and fired his Taser which stopped Young, police said. He was later transported to Norwalk Hospital to have the Taser probes removed, police said.

Police said the officers who apprehended Young were Officers Edwin Vigil and Stuart Schwengerer. Officer Schwengerer was the first one to Taser Young and Officer Vigil stopped Young with a second Taser.

Police said Young had a very small chance of escaping because Vigil runs in marathons as a hobby.

Officer Michael Cummings was able to locate and apprehend Leak who ran from the scene and hid in a parking lot, police said. All of the officers involved in the arrests did an outstanding job, police said.

At the same time, Leak ran away before officers found him hiding in the 1020 Post Road restaurant parking lot, police said. Leak told officers he ran because he was scared, police said.

Sawyer was charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and failure to return suspended license, police said. He posted a $500 bond and was scheduled to appear in court on April 20.

Leak was charged with reckless endangerment and interfering with an officer, police said. He was released on a promise to appear and was scheduled to appear in court on April 20.

Young was charged with reckless endangerment, interfering with an officer, criminal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle and criminal possession of a pistol/revolver, police said. He was held in lieu of $50,000 bond and appeared in court April 11.
