The Darien Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of programs for the residents. Registration for programs takes place online at www.darienct.gov/parkrec, at the Parks and Recreation office located in Town Hall, or through the mail. Tiny Tots Soccer: Blue Wave Kickers' Tiny Tots Soccer engages children in physical activity while developing their motor and basic soccer skills. Mommy/Daddy & Me classes are offered on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday mornings and classes for children ages 3 to 5 are offered Tuesday through Saturday. Jon Bradley, Darien High School boys' varsity soccer coach, will run the program. A session starts in late January.
Blue Wave Kicker Soccer Academy: The program offers players the chance to further develop their skill set and gain more experience playing soccer in a safe and fun environment. The sessions will consist of 30 minutes skill training and 30 minutes playing. The program will run on Tuesdays from Jan. 8 to March 5. Kindergarten to grade 2 boys will meet from 4 to 5 p.m., kindergarten to grade 2 girls from 5 to 6 p.m. and grades 3 and 4 boys and girls from 6 to 7 p.m. The fee is $170 for residents; $204 for nonresidents.
Blue Wave Kickers Little Athletes: Staff will engage children in physical activity while developing motor skills and sports fundamentals, build confidence and self-esteem by playing fun games built around sports, such as soccer, basketball and t-ball. The program will run on Tuesdays or Wednesdays from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. for six weeks in the Town Hall gymnasium. A session starts Jan. 29. The fee is $110 for residents; $132 for nonresidents.
Future Stars Basketball: Future Stars Basketball Academy will be offering an instructional program for boys and girls ages 5 to 10 on Monday and Thursday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Darien Town Hall gymnasium. The program will meet for eight weeks starting Jan. 3. The program fee is $215 for residents; $258 for nonresidents. Each player will receive a Future Stars jersey for participating. The program will include Future Stars' Lessons of Life Program -- sportsmanship, teamwork, doing well in school, respecting parents -- and will be run by former college star and NBA player Frank Oleynick.
Junior Paddle Tennis Lessons: The clinics are an introduction to the game of paddle tennis at Weed Beach. Clinics will use fun drills and games to teach participants the rules and strategies. Paddles will be provided or participants may use their own. Clinics will run at Weed Beach for nine weeks starting Jan. 5 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons for ages 7 to 14. The fee is $240 for residents/$288 for nonresidents.
Pee-Wee Tennis: New Level Sports will be offering indoor pee-wee tennis lessons at the Darien Town Hall gymnasium starting in January. Lessons are conducted for children ages 3 to 5 on Monday from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Lessons also take place Monday or Thursday in 45-minute increments from 12:15 to 3:15 p.m. Each participant will receive a tennis racket. The fee is $130 for residents; $156 for nonresidents.
Guitar Lessons: Learn chords, scales, theory and to play favorite songs. Classes will meet each Wednesday in the Town Hall small gymnasium starting Jan. 9 and running through March 6. Beginners meet from 4 to 5 p.m. or 5 to 6 p.m. while intermediates meet from 6 to 7 p.m. The program is for children ages 8 to 15. The fee is $220 for residents; $264 for nonresidents.
New Level Floor Hockey: The program will serve as a foundation for the game of hockey. Each class will consist of instruction, a skill session, and game time. Every participant will receive a practice jersey. Classes for children ages 5 to 8 will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. and ages 8 to 11 will meet from 5 to 6 p.m. The course meets for eight Friday afternoons starting Jan. 4 in the Town Hall gymnasium. The fee is $150 for residents; $180 for nonresidents.
Zumbatomics: Classes are high-energy fitness parties packed with special choreographed, kid-friendly routines and all the music kids love. Zumbatomics helps to increase kids' focus and self-confidence, boosting metabolism and enhancing coordination. Classes for children ages 5 to 10 will meet from 4 to 4:45 p.m. on Mondays starting Jan. 7 in the Town Hall gymnasium for eight weeks. The fee is $100 for residents; $120 for nonresidents.
Adult Paddle Tennis Lessons: Buddy Scudder, certified platform tennis professional, will be offering adult clinics at Weed Beach. Instruction will focus on stroke production, strategy and teamwork with a mixture of high-intensity drills, point-situation drills, technique work and match play. Clinics will run for nine weeks starting Jan. 5 on either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday or Saturday. The fee is $360 for residents; $432 for nonresidents.
