Darien Police have identified the driver of the BMW that crashed through two houses on Hollow Tree Road over the weekend as 30-year-old Whitney Smith of Darien.
"Shortly after 1 a.m. [Sunday], we responded to a fire alarm at 122 Hollow Tree Ridge Road. Upon arrival, we discovered a serious motor-vehicle accident," Darien Police Sgt. Jeremiah Marron said Sunday morning.
"It struck two houses. The vehicle was airborne, and went through one house, struck a tree and entered a second house," he said.
According to Marron, the vehicle went through a bedroom in the first home; the owners are on vacation and no one was home. The vehicle then went through the kitchen of the second home, Marron said.
"The entire family was home, but nobody was injured," Marron said.
"We're still on scene ¦ and we just removed the vehicle from the house," he said shortly before 10 a.m. on Sunday.
"The problems that we've been facing is that there's so much structural damage to the house that it's in danger of collapsing. It's been a little tricky trying to remove the vehicle. We have it out on the driveway on its roof, but it's barely discernible as a vehicle," Marron said.
The initial investigation has revealed that the vehicle was traveling in excess of the 25 mph speed limit, according to police.
Hollow Tree Ridge Road between Linden Avenue and Hillside Avenue will be closed today (Monday) until 2:30 p.m.
