The activities in September at the Darien Senior Center, 30 Edgerton St., are:
Battle of the River Plate: An historical series with Art Gottlieb, LCSW, on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 12:30 p.m. In the early days of World War II, the German warship Graf Spee was cornered in the South Atlantic by three Royal Navy cruisers and, after a running battle, fled into the neutral port of Montivedeo. Believing to be outnumbered and unable to escape, Graf Spee's captain ordered his own ship destroyed rather than surrender to the British.
State Sen. Bob Duff, who represents Darien and Norwalk, will be serving lunch and meet with seniors from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5. Constituents are encouraged to bring their ideas, thoughts and concerns to Duff .He serves as chairman of the Banks Committee, vice chairman of the Energy & Technology and Transportation Committees and a member of the Appropriations Committee.
Patriotic Salute to America: Karen Wagner, who has been the lead singer for many Boston- and Connecticut-based bands, will lead the celebration, which takes place at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6. AARP Safe Driver Courses take place from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, and Wednesday, Oct. 10. Lunch, at $4, will be served from noon to 12:30 p.m. Lunch reservations must be made at the sign-in desk before class. The cost of the driving course is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. ACBL Diamond Series Bridge Play of the Hand will take place Thursdays at 10 a.m. beginning Thursday, Sept. 6. Facilitator Dr. Richard Olson will emphasize the balance between bidding and play of the hand. Lessons will be structured so that at least half the lesson is Play of the Hand. Initial bidding concepts will be reviewed and a few new concepts will be introduced. The course will run for 12 weeks and is $5 per class.
A representative from Family Centers will be on hand to explain the issues one faces with a thyroid problem at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10. Undiagnosed thyroid problems can dramatically increase the risk of obesity, heart disease, depression, anxiety, hair loss and a host of other symptoms.
Intermediate Bridge will be taught on Fridays at 12:30 p.m. beginning Friday, Sept. 7, and continues until Friday, Jun2 28. Douglas Thompson will be teaching the class. He is a Silver Life Master, placing him among the top 10 percent of players in the United States. He is an American Contract Bridge League certified instructor and game director.
