The fall sports season is well under way at Greens Farms Academy with all five varsity sports in action last week.

GIRLS SOCCER

The Freya Coombe Era began at GFA with a 1-1-1 week under the new head coach.

Kendra Offerman (Bedford, NY) made four saves as the GFA girls soccer team opened the season with a 0-0 tie against Christian Heritage on Tuesday, Sept. 12.

Elyse Kimball (Easton) had GFA's best scoring chance when she hit the cross bar with a shot midway through the second half.

Later in the week, Clare Foley (Southport) scored a goal off an Ella Murphy (Darien) assist in the first half stood up as the Dragons notched their first win of the season 1-0 over Holy Child.

Offerman notched her second straight shutout to backstop the win as GFA improved to 1-0-1 on the season.

GFA's backiine, led by Samara Cohen (Westport), Kelly Van Hoesen (Greenwich), Westport), and Stephanie Wistreich (Wilton) helped solidify Offerman's clean sheet.

The Dragons capped the week by going to Simsbury where they fell to Ethel Walker by a 4-2 count.

Sarah Logan (Darien) and Annika White (Southport) tallied the goals for GFA, which got eight more saves from Offerman.

BOYS SOCCER

The Dragons went 1-1-1 on the week.

They started things with a 2-0 road win over Cheshire Academy.

Charlie Benson (Darien) from Jack Soper (Southport)'18) and Nick Attai (Bridgeport) from Jake Sinnott (Fairifeld) netted goals in the first and second half, respectively as GFA notched the victory.

Henry Holzinger (Westport) stopped seven shots to pitch his second straight shutout.

On Friday, the Dragons headed to South Kent for the first round of the Sportsmen Cardinals Classic.

Holzinger made 16 saves as the Dragons fell to Parkland High School, one of the top public high schools in Pennsylvania and the No. 1 team in the Lehigh Valley area.

On Saturday, in the consolation game, with Holzinger unavailable Ethan Phan got his first start of the season and made nine saves as the Dragons took away a 2-2 tie against St. Andrews School.

The Dragons (2-1-1) got on the board first on a Zach Liston (Wilton) corner kick. Liston's boot was redirected by Ian Lee (Old Greenwich) to Benson, who buried it for a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, Liston scored off an assist from Kyle Merzon (Greenwich) to make it 2-1 before St. Andrews scored the game-tying goal.

VOLLEYBALL

The GFA volleyball team split its opening week, losing a thriller on the road at Sacred Heart and wining on the road at Forman.

In the season opener, the Dragons fell 3-2 by scores of 25-19, 25-18, 22-25, 13-25, 14-16.

GFA had some excellent performances with hitters Kirwan Carey (Westport) providing 13 kills and 11 blocks, freshman Elena Mota (Darien) 11 kills while Meg Nesi (Fairfield) added 20 assists.

Defensively, Alex Nason (Darien) had 15 digs along senior Celeste Matte (Stratford) notching eight digs and Ililta Pina (Weston) with nine digs.

On Saturday at Forman, the Dragons picked up their first win of the season on the road at Forman taking the match 3-0 by the scores of 25-12, 25-8, 25-11.

GFA took command of the match early and powered through all three sets with the entire team contributing.

Sophomore Jesse Boolbol (Greenwich) had six 6 aces and Hannah Kozdeba (Shelton) had 5 aces to lead a very strong serving attack that set the tone early.

The offense was led by Carey (8 kills) and Nesi (14 assists).

Defensively the Dragons were led by Nason (7 digs) and senior Pina (6 digs).

The win brings the team's record to (1-1) and the Dragons will be back in action on Monday when they host The Masters School for their first home match of the season.

CROSS COUNTRY

The GFA boys cross country team notched a trio of wins at Wednesday's season-opening cross country meet at Sherwood Island Park.

GFA bested King (15-50), St. Luke's (21-37) and Masters (27-28) while falling to Rye Country Day (23-36), Hopkins (16-47) and Brunswick (15-48).

Sean Minson (Darien) placed 13th overall in 19:35.9 while Connor Calzone (Norwalk) was 19th in 19:53.8. Charlie Bohnsack (Darien, 20:51.6) and Owen Minson (Darien, 21:01.5) were 27th and 29th, respectively, out of a field of 118 runners.

Will Magrone (Darien, 33rd, 21:07.8) and Jeb Rooney (Darien, 43rd, 21:32) were joined by Ross Mix (Darien, 49th, 21:42.7) and Larson Palmgren (Fairfield, 50th, 21.50) in the top eight.

In the girls meet, Caroline McCall (Westport) placed 14th in 23:34.5 in her varsity XC debut. Kaitlin Reed (Southport) was 48th in 26:18.3 and Bella Worrell (Westport) rounded out the Dragons with a time of 28:17.1.

On Saturday, the Dragons competed in the 29th annual Wilton Invitational.

McCall placed ninth in the prestigious freshman race on Saturday morning in Wilton, highlighting the day for the Dragons.

McCall ran the 2,500-meter course in 9:56.71 to notch her first top 10 finish of the season.

In the boys varsity race, the Dragons placed three runners under the 20-minute mark.

Sean Minson placed 93rd (19:29.36), Calzone was 96th (19:36.62) and Bohnsack was 104th (19:56.80) to pace the GFA efforts. Mix (136th, 21:13.5) and Owen Minson (145th, 21:21.01) rounded out the scoring Dragons.
