DARIEN — A Darien man was charged with animal cruelty after police received a tip he was running an illegal kennel where an animal died from overheating.

Terrance Burns, 44, is accused of running “Terry’s House of Pets” out of his Hoyt Street home where people alleged he was abusing and neglecting animals and leaving them in unsanitary conditions. Police received a tip about the illegal kennel in July. Through an investigation with the town’s animal control officer and state animal control authorities, police determined probable cause to arrest Burns and put a warrant out for his arrest.

On Oct. 6, Burns turned himself in to police on the warrant. He was charged with animal cruelty and operating an unlicensed kennel. He was released on a $25,000 court set bond and will appear in Stamford Superior Court on Oct. 16.

While on release, Burns is to cease his kennel operation and not care for any more animals.
