Nonprofits in Darien received 52 grants totaling more than $290,000 from the Fairfield County Community Foundation and its donors in the last fiscal year.

The foundation and its donors awarded more than 1,100 grants and 311 scholarships totaling $17.3 million.

Darien nonprofits receiving support included Community Fund of Darien, YMCA, Aging in Place + Gallivant, Darien Library, Person-to-Person and Darien EMS- Post 53.

"As our region continues to grapple with ongoing economic challenges, our donors have continued to respond as never before to help those in need," Juanita James, foundation president and CEO, said.

"While critical support to food banks, health clinics, shelters and job training programs continue to be top areas of giving, the foundation and many of our donors also focus on long-term issues such as education, affordable housing and transportation."

Grants come from donations to the foundation placed in endowments to address the ever-changing community needs and charitable funds established by individual donors. Scholarships are awarded by local high school programs as well as through a competitive application process at the foundation.
