Moises Afonso, 53, of 50 Draper St., Dorchester, Mass., was charged July 8 with second- and fifth-degree larceny and operating a vehicle without a license after police removed him at gun point from the vehicle they said he stole.

Police said the patrol vehicle's license plate reader alerted that a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban traveling westbound on Post Road was possibly stolen. The Suburban entered Interstate 95 southbound and was subsequently stopped by police at the exit 10 off ramp.

Police said Afonso was operating the vehicle, which had been stolen from West Springfield, Mass., a few days before this incident.

While searching the Suburban, police found check books and a laptop that were located in a 1999 Chrysler Town and Country van which was reported stolen from Springfield, Mass., on July 5. Police said Afonso has an extensive criminal history, which includes previous auto thefts.

Afonso did not post his $20,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court Monday.
