The Darien fifth grade boys Blue travel basketball team brought home the hardware after a thrilling 57-51 win over the Fairfield PAL Knicks on Tuesday, Mar. 8 at Fairfield Ludlowe High School.

Darien capped off a terrific two-week tournament run by besting Norwalk, West Hartford, Redding and ultimately Fairfield.

“We gelled as a team at the right point of the season" coach Dan Volz said. "Each tournament win was a complete team victory with our final game being the epitome of team basketball."

Cheered on by injured guard Brenton Dolan, Darien's tournament championship win was headlined by Simeon Doll's 17 points. Doll's clutch shooting helped Darien stretch its lead to 11 points early in the fourth quarter.

Darien's man in the middle, Brendan Howard, saved his best game of the season for last as he grabbed rebound after rebound and put up 16 points - with some fine free throw shooting throughout.

Darien's swingmen Liam McBride (eight points) and Sam Sealy (three points) played big on both sides of the court with their passing and slashing.

Hustle plays by Mac McGahren (four points) and Luke O'Connell (two points) kept the pressure on Fairfield - their pressing defense was the difference.

The dynamic duo of Tommy (three points) and Will Anderson (two points) came up big when it counted along with Darien's floor general Isaac McMullin's (two points) nifty steals and pinpoint passing.

In the closing seconds of the game Darien showered coach Volz with a jug of water and a tournament Champion was crowned. Darien wanted to offer a special thanks for the loud and boisterous crowd that made the 30 minute drive up to Fairfield--the "sixth man” was electrifying.
