Veterans, town officials and community members gathered at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien Saturday, Dec. 15, for the annual Wreaths Across America ceremony.

The 20-year-old tradition, which takes place throughout the United States and abroad, honors U.S. veterans during the holiday season by laying wreaths on their grave sites.

In light of yesterday's school shooting in Newtown, First Selectman Jayme Stevenson laid a wreath in the firefighter portion of the cemetery honoring the efforts of the Sandy Hook firefighters.

Wreaths are sponsored through local contributions.

The event is hosted by the Darien VFW, and included organizations such as Darien High School's Save Our Soldiers, Daughters of the American Revolution, Children of the American Revolution, the Freemasons and local fire.

This year, the Darien High School football team presented a check to the veterans.
