Robert M. Baylis, of Darien, has been elected to AmeriCares' board of directors.

Baylis brings to the board management experience and nonprofit expertise. A former investment banker and former chairman of the board of Gildan Activewear Inc., Baylis is the lead director of Host Hotels & Resorts Inc.

"I have been a longtime supporter of AmeriCares and believe in its mission to help improve health and save lives," Baylis said. "I am proud to deepen my commitment to an organization doing such great work all over the world."

He also serves as a trustee and chairman of the executive committee of the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City, as a trustee and chairman of the audit committee of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and on the board of overseers of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Business School, he is a chartered financial analyst.

The AmeriCares board of directors oversees all aspects of the organization's humanitarian aid programs, including its disaster response work and medical aid deliveries in the developing world. In 2012, AmeriCares delivered medicines and relief supplies to 91 countries, including the United States, where the charity supports health care for the uninsured and underinsured.
