Deadline nears for rent rebate applications

Darien senior citizens and/or disabled residents have until Sept. 15 to apply for a rent rebate from the State of Connecticut for 2011.

Applications will be accepted at the Social Service Department.

To be eligible, applicants must have one year's residency in Connecticut, be age 65 as of Dec. 31, 2011, or receive Social Security Disability. Married couples must not exceed $39,500 in income, and singles not more than $32,300.

All income including Social Security (Social Security Form SSA-1099) must be reported and documented, including pensions, interest on bank accounts, dividends and wages. If a 2011 federal income tax return was filed, a copy is required. Proof of rent and utility payments is required for every month of rent. Receipts or canceled checks are acceptable.
