Nikhil Basu, 49, of 24 Sunswyck Ave. was arrested on June 22 on a charge of driving under the influence.

Police said Basu drove through a sobriety checkpoint on Tokeneke Road on 2:26 a.m., set up by Darien and Stamford police, in his grey 2004 Mini Cooper. After he was stopped and when officers spoke with him, they smelled alcohol coming from his car, said police.

Police said Basu admitted to drinking beer at Ernie's Bar, but felt that he was helping his friend by driving him home. Basu told police that his friend, who was in the passenger seat, was too drunk to drive, according to the report. Basu was administered a field sobriety test, which he failed, said police.
