Christopher Guthmen, 19, of Fairfield, was charged with third-degree burglary, sixth-degree larceny and possession of burglar tools Feb. 9.

An officer was patrolling in the area of Noroton Heights when he observed Guthmen walking down the middle of Noroton Avenue dressed in a gray hoodie sweatshirt, dark pants and a black ski mask, police said. When asked why he was walking down the middle of the road Guthmen told the officer he was lost and needed a ride to Norwalk. While speaking to Guthmen, the officer noticed a charging cable for a GPS unit hanging out of his pocket.

Guthmen later admitted he had stolen a Garmin GPS unit and chewing tobacco from an unlocked car. The GPS unit belonged to a Darien resident who said she had parked her car in the Center Street Parking lot and left it unlocked while she was at Darien Social, police said. When she returned to her vehicle the GPS unit, valued at $300 was missing.

Guthmen was held in lieu of a $1,000 cash bond and scheduled to appear in court Feb. 21.
