The United Sons and Daughters defeated Lower Naugatuck Valley 61-58 in overtime to win gold medal in U14 boys basketball at the 2013 Nutmeg State Games.

The USAD squad is comprised of Fairfield County rising high school freshmen, including Darien residents Sunday Okeke, Alex Preston, Jackson Ryan, Carter Scott and Zak Swetye. The team is coached by Greens Farms Academy varsity coach Doug Scott, who is also from Darien.

In pool play, USAD beat the CT Northstars (Hartford) 76-36, The Shehan Center (Bridgeport) 63-51, East Hartford Rough Riders 58-31, STAR Athletic Club (New London) 52-41.

In the quarterfinals, USAD topped New Haven 56-42 and in the semifinals, it rematched against STAR AC and dominated 77-36.

In the championship game, USAD had a 15-point lead in the second, but ran into some foul trouble, which sparked an LNV comeback. USAD then found the answers for a thrilling win in the overtime period.

In addition to the 2013 Nutmeg State Games gold medal, USAD also won this year's Connecticut State AAU championship. The team wraps up its summer season this week by traveling to Orlando, FL to compete in a national AAU tournament.
