Republican Michael Ferguson claimed victory Tuesday night over Democrat Jeff Tomchik for House District 138, though unofficial results were not available as of midnight.

A call seeking comment from Tomchik was not returned.

The two candidates were vying to fill the seat vacated by Republican Jan Giegler.

Tomchik, a city firefighter, and Ferguson, a Danbury High School and Western Connecticut State University graduate, both ran on their intimate knowledge of Danbury. The district also includes portions of New Fairfield and Ridgefield.

Ferguson, who also sits on the Danbury school board, supported reducing retirement benefits for state employees, a measure that Tomchick opposed.

The two also disagreed on increasing the minimum wage, with Tomchik calling for the minimum hourly earning to be increased to $15 and Ferguson arguing that doing so would force companies to lay off employees.
