Girls varsity basketball
On Thursday, Jan. 7, The Greens Farms Academy girls basketball team suffered a 70-57 loss to FAA and NEPSAC opponent St. Luke's.
The Dragons were able to go on a multiple runs and at one point brought the game to within 9 points. Leading the scoring for the Dragons was junior co-captain Lexi Kimball (Easton) who finished with a season and game-high 36 points along with 4 assists, 2 blocks, 2 rebounds and 1 steal. Junior Olivia Sullivan (Norwalk) had 17 points, 6 rebounds and 6 blocks. Senior co-captain Caroline Lewis (Fairfield) chipped in 2 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assist, while eighth grader Ashley Humphrey (Darien) had 2 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 1 steal. Freshman Katherine Marcus (New Canaan) had 5 steals.
GFA boys competed against Hopkins School and St. John's Prep on Saturday, Jan. 9, at Hopkins. GFA lost 11-17 against Hopkins and 6-21 against St. John's Prep.
GFA lost to Hopkins School foil with a final score of 5-4. Sophomore Teddy Gartland (Darien) won all of his bouts, finishing the round 3-0. Sophomore Matt Jackmauh (Old Greenwich) went 1-2, and sophomore Chili Hopkins (Old Greenwich) went 0-2. Freshman Willem Schuddeboom (Darien) went 0-1. Against St. John's, Gartland went 2-1, while Jackmauh went 1-2, Schuddeboom went 0-2, and Hopkins went 0-1.
Boys epee won 6-3 against Hopkins School. Captain and senior Ryan Petschek (Norwalk) went 2-1, while senior Alex McKenna (Stamford) went 1-2, and junior Philip Nicopoulos (Wilton) finished the round 3-0. The boys lost 3-6 against St. John's epee. Petschek went 0-3, while McKenna and Nicopoulos both went 1-2.
GFA men's saber lost 1-8 against Hopkins, losing three bouts by default because the GFA squad had only two fencers. Senior and team armorer Matthew Lichtenberg (Stamford) finished the round 1-2, narrowly losing two of his three bouts 4-5. Junior Will Whitman (Stamford) finished 0-3. The boys lost 0-9 against St. John's saber, including three losses by default. Lichtenberg and Whitman both went 0-3.
On Jan. 9, GFA girls fencing lost 11-16 to the Hopkins School and 6-21 against Dana Hall School.
Girls foil won against Hopkins with a final score of 6-3. Senior captain Erica Im (Trumbull) won 2-1 as did senior Kate Koster (Westport) and senior Kate Allan (Fairfield). Against Dana Hall, GFA foil lost 1-8. Im went 1-2, while Koster and Allan went 0-3 and 0-2, respectively. Freshman Alida Deutsch (Westport) lost her bout 0-1
GFA girls lost 4-5 against Hopkins epee. Senior Caroline Booth (Westport) went 2-1, as did senior Lauren Telesz (Fairfield). Freshman Amy Petschek (Norwalk) lost three difficult matches, finishing 0-3. Against Dana Hall, epee lost 3-6. Telesz went 1-2 as did Booth and Petschek.
The Dragons lost 1-8 against a challenging Hopkins team. Junior Shira Friedson (Trumbull) lost 1-2. Freshman Hannah Calzone (Norwalk) lost 0-3. Sophomore Caroline Telesz (Fairfield) lost 0-2 and senior Daria Locher (Darien) lost 0-1. The saber team lost 2-7 against Dana Hall. Both Friedson and Calzone lost 1-2. Locher finished at 0-2 while Telesz went 0-1.
Boys varsity basketball
On Thursday, Jan. 7, the boys varsity basketball team rallied back from a 14-point deficit to beat undefeated Hopkins School 63-62. Then on Saturday, Jan. 9, GFA gave up a late lead and lost to Rye Country Day 73-71.
Against Hopkins junior Elvin Rodriguez (Darien) had 20 points and five assists. Senior Dom Cristiano, Jr. (Valhalla, N.Y.) had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Sunday Okeke (Darien) had eight points, 11 rebounds, five steals and five assists. Senior Isaac Manton (Greenwich) had 10 points and four steals. Junior Evan Roteman (Westport) broke the Hopkins press, scored, rebounded assisted, and stole multiple times.
The GFA stat leaders for the Rye game: Okeke had 18 points, 18 rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals. Rodriguez had 17 points. Sophomore Henry Holzinger (Norwalk) had six assists, and Isaac Manton had five steals.
Girls Varsity Squash
Dragons squash earned their first win of the season in a close match against King on Tuesday, Jan. 5, by a margin of 4-3. Sophomore Katie Mackle (New Canaan), senior Avery Vanacore (Darien), and senior Bella Kallassy (New Canaan) all dispatched their opponents in a decisive three games (11-8, 11-6, 11-5; 11-3, 11-7, 11-6; 11-7, 11-3, 11-7). After losing her first match, senior Georgia Bakes (Rowayton) came back determined to win and took her opponent in games two, three, and four (6-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-2).
On Thursday, Jan. 6, the Dragons defeated New Canaan High School 5-2 in their second win of the season. Playing in the No. 1 spot, senior Ingrid Backe (Fairfield) delivered a 3-0 win for her team (11-6, 11-2, 11-5). Vanacore won at the No. 2 spot (8-11, 11-5, 9-11, 11-7, 7-11). Finally, Bakes and Kallassy each won their matches in four (4-11, 11-4, 113, 11-3 and 11-5, 11-7, 9-11, 11-6).
Saturday the GFA Dragon wrestling team competed in a home tri-meet against Hamden Hall and Wilbraham & Monson. The Dragons dropped both dual meets due to forfeits but won the majority of their matches.
Against Hamden Hall junior Hans Forland (Wilton) currently ranked No. 2 in New England Preps at 120 lbs., intentionally missed weight to wrestle up to the 132 lb. weight class, falling to his opponent 2-5. Senior Simon Stone (Wilton) won by pin in his 182 lb. match.
Despite losing to Wilbraham & Monson by forfeits, 36-34, GFA wrestlers won every match. Earning pins were sophomore JC Foster (Darien), freshman Adler Viton (Stamford) and Stone.
