A garage was gutted and a car and two motorcycles were destroyed late Monday night in a Darien fire.

Darien Fire Marshal Robert Buch said the fire, at 13 Wakeman Road, was called in by the homeowner at 11:10 p.m. Monday. The resident and his wife smelled smoke in their bed and after checking the house the homeowner went outside to inspect the adjoining two-car garage.

When he opened up the garage door, the fire "lit up on him," Buch said.

The homeowner, his wife and two children got out of the house without injury, Buch said.

The garage was gutted along with a 2006 Jaguar and two motorcycles.

A cause for the fire has not yet been determined, Buch said, although firefighters believe the blaze began in the left rear of the garage.

Along with the garage destroyed, fire damage was also evident in the master bedroom of the home, which is above the right side of the garage.

The residents spent the night with neighbors. While the rest of the home was not burned and can be lived in, smoke damage occured throughout the home, Buch said.
