Genesee & Wyoming, which has administrative offices in Rochester, N.Y., and its operations headquarters in Jacksonville, Fla., chose Darien because the office is easily accessible for staff and clients, spokesman Michael Williams said.
"The West Avenue location is convenient to the train for our employees and visitors from Manhattan," he said. "The exterior has the colonial New England charm we sought, with the wonderful proximity to Tilley Pond Park. Plus, a railroad company being located adjacent to a train station has a logical feel to it."
The company has outgrown its space in Greenwich, and it provided an opportunity to seek a less expensive location, said Williams, who did not disclose rental rate information.
The Darien space also provides room for staff growth, he said.
Genesee & Wyoming joins Lanphier Salon and Day Spa in the 18,000-square-foot building, most recently occupied by TD Bank. Lanphier, which opened this year, is leasing 9,616 square feet.
Commenting that the lease is for more than six years, Bob Gillon, president of Signature Group, a Darien commercial real estate brokerage that represents building owner Darien Station Associates, said his client spent about $2 million to remodel the building.
"Genesee & Wyoming's selection of Darien for its corporate headquarters location is a testament to both the business and lifestyle appeal of the town," he said.
Genesee & Wyoming found an ideal location because the building is a short walk to Tilly Pond Park, the rail station and downtown shops and restaurants, said Carol Wilder-Tamme, president of the Darien Chamber of Commerce.
"It's the trifecta of prime locations," she said. "Genesee & Wyoming will add an interesting bit to our business mix."
