"The Hunger Games" will be shown at the Darien Library on Friday, Aug. 24, at 6:30 and 9 p.m.

The 2012 film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. It takes place in a not-too-distant future after North America has collapsed. Weakened by drought, fire, famine and war, the continent has been replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games.

Part entertainment and part brutal intimidation, the televised games are broadcast throughout Panem. All citizens are required to watch the 24 participants eliminate their competitors.
