DARIEN — Combining the fun of rock with a meaningful education in music theory, the Darien Parks & Recreation Department’s Rock Out Summer Camp is giving kids a chance to explore song this summer.

With weekly sessions held at First Congregational Church of Darien, kids spend time with one-on-one instruction for guitar, drums, bass and other rock instruments.

After a decade of teaching individual classes through Parks & Recreation Departments in Darien, Fairfield, New Canaan and Norwalk, organizer Shane O’Reilly is watching his dream of a rock music summer camp unfold.

“The special thing about my camp is the instructors are the best of the best,” he said, including fulltime music teachers from both Darien and New Canaan Public Schools.

“It’s great when these kids come in and see their teachers,” he said.
