DARIEN — An authentic Russian artist and art historian gave a talk Monday at the Darien Library on the traditional Matryoshka nesting dolls and more.

Marina Forbes, a member of the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, teacher and artist, brought a range of dolls and icon paintings. She spoke of the cultural significance of the traditional peasant doll, which she described as the cultural equivalent of Barbie, but with a more realistic body image.

Forbes hopes to return in the spring, when she may run a workshop on creating the dolls.
