Joan Strauss Strauss, a 57-year Darien resident, died peacefully at home on Dec. 27 surrounded by her family. She was 94.

Mrs. Strauss and her husband of 70 years, Henry, sailed all over the world. On her travels she always carried her camera. She took photos that documented the many places they visited and the many cultures they experienced.

She was a student nurse at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City when she met her husband. They were introduced by a friend who thought it would be fun to introduce a Strauss to another Strauss. While Hank courted her on his motorcycle, she completed her studies and became a psychiatric nurse. She was on the staff of Bloomingdale Psychiatric Hospital in Westchester.

Mrs. Strauss was a caring person who raised her daughters to think of others.

She volunteered in Darien with the Red Cross, the Democratic Town Committee and Person-to-Person.

She was a member of Noroton Yacht Club.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters Jan Raymond, of Darien, and Terry Strauss-White, of Mill Valley, Calif.; their husbands; three grandchildren; and two great grand children.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Person-to-Person Scholarship Fund.
