Kirch's goal lifts Newtown over New Fairfield

After a scoreless first quarter, Newtown scored three straight goals and held a 3-1 halftime lead. Sophomore Grant Speer scored two of those Newtown goals and Brendan O'Connor scored one. Matt Wilson scored for New Fairfield off a pass from Steve Marmaras in the second quarter.
The Rebels scored two goals in the third quarter to tie the game, one by Jeff Hopkins and one by Brandon Semchyshen.
Kirch put Newtown ahead 4-3 with a goal in the third quarter off a pass from John Oliver, but Semchyshen's second goal tied the game 4-4 in the fourth quarter.
Kirch scored three minutes later to put the Nighthawks ahead for good.
Chris Body made 10 saves to seal the win for Newtown and Devon Manfredonia led a solid defensive effort with 10 ground balls. Sean Bondy made nine saves for New Fairfield.

NEW MILFORD - John Yates scored the game-winning goal in overtime off a pass from Shea Sheppard to lift the Saints.
Canterbury's Warren Garceau scored with five seconds left in regulation to force the extra period.
Chopper Smith and Sheppard each had two goals for the winners. Kevin Lind and Will McKee led Gunnery with two goals apiece.

WASHINGTON, Conn. - Travis Horrigan scored the winning run in the 10th inning, stealing home on a double steal with runners on first and third. He had reached on an error, moved to second on Chris Murray's sacrifice and to third on Pierce Clair's single.
Travis Horrigan also drove in Tom Belanger in the seventh inning to tie the score and force extra innings; Belanger had reached on a single.
Mike Horrigan picked up the win on the mound, pitching five innings of relief, striking out three walking none and scattering five hits. It was his second win ion relief this week; the other came Wednesday against Thomaston.
Shepaug center fielder Kevin Horrigan made a leaping catch in the 10th inning, saving at least a double.

RED HOOK, N.Y. - Brewster pitchers Kiersten Schramek and Jessica Gogatz were dominant, shutting out Rhinebeck and Red Hook, respectively, as the Bears advanced to the championship game of the Red Hook Tournament.
Meanwhile, Brewster's offense was equally impressive, scoring 18 runs on 17 hits in the two games combined.
Schramek (2-0) allowed three hits over seven innings, striking out nine batters in the first game. Gogatz and teammate Aileen Lytle each hit a double and drove in two runs.
Gogatz (4-0) pitched a three-hitter in the second game. Katie Pesature had two doubles and was one of four Brewster players to have two RBIs.
Brewster plays against Saugerties today at 2:45 p.m. for the tournament championship.
Meanwhile, in a ceremony at Brewster High last Friday, four team members expected to sign national collegiate letters of intent were honored. Catcher Christa Leighton is signing with Seton Hall. Meanwhile, shortstop Carly Kinkler will sign this week with St. Joseph's in Philadelphia, Gogatz will sign with St. Thomas Aquinas and second baseman Jessica Stangarone will sign with Ithaca College.
