Memorial Day is a day to remember those who died in service to our country. Locally it's a day that Darien's volunteers honor those who have served by organizing a parade with bands, veterans, elected officials and civic organizations marching down the Post Road.

Last week, we lost a friend who made the parade an important event in our town. For many years, Art Van Sciver, owner of the Bait Shop in Rowayton, provided a Mako boat, trailer and truck to a grateful Darien Sail & Power Squadron. The boat, respectfully dressed with the American flag and other nautical flags, would always be filled with excited, smiling and waving children.

We will miss Art's annual drive down the Post Road that always made Memorial Day a day of respect for our veterans and a day of joy to the young members of our boating community.

Thanks you, Art. You were an very important part of our town. We will remember you and we will miss you.

John Pedersen, Commander

Darien Sail & Power Squadron
